For webhosting tips, scroll down to “PS” and “PPS” of this post.

I started my first website back in 1999 on a free host [the measly site is still online at www.dragonsinn.8m.com].

I’d suggest a paid hosting service for large-scale website ventures, but if you’re testing things out and etc, you might find a free hosting service useful to begin with.

Read their FAQs for extra info, here are the key features [as of this date (which are subject to change at their discretion, blah blah)] –

1. Populora * - http://populora.com

  • Upload by entering HTML or submitting ZIP file
  • No registration required - your site will be reviewed by an editor (and online in a few hours if approved)
  • You must update your site once every 24 hours, if you want to continue owning the name (www.populora.com/my-domain)
  • Ads on each page submitted

* Thanks to Jesse W. for the heads up.

2. Freewebs - http://members.freewebs.com/

  • Space: 40 MB, Bandwidth: 500MB
  • Allows FTP access
  • Allows domain redirection to your hosted site at Freewebs
  • Banner advertising at the top + Text link advertising at the bottom

3. Best Free Webhosting (~ Top 10) - http://www.free-webhosts.com/best-free-webhosts.php

  • No forced ads
  • DigitalSpace, Free Hostia, and Jumpline (listed on the above link), provide a 12-month free trial of their full basic hosting packages. I’d feel compelled to stay on with them if I tried the free trial out for a year — a risk I’m not personally willing to take.

PS: Caveat emptor is Latin for “let the buyer beware” — a nice thing to remember when web-hosting.

PPS: May I suggest Host Disciple for a list of (paid) webhosting companies that aren’t jokers. If you need a good reliable host, spend some time browsing and deciding on one. It’s well worth it to pay a bit more for the services, instead of paying less in the short-term, in exchange for a whole bunch of nonsense.
